SUMMER HEALTH-TIPS FOR YOUR AQUARIUM

We share some top tips for aquarium care in summers, so there’s nothing ‘fishy’ about it!

• Be sure to check the variations in room temperature. The ability of water to hold Oxygen goes down with increasing temperature stressing your aquatic petsto breathe faster thereby damaging their immune system.

Aquarium care demands proper functionality of fish tank equipmentslike water filters, hoods and pumps quintessential to the life-support system.

Feeding fish five times during summers is needful. However, care must be taken to avoid overfeeding which may increase disease susceptibility and growth of algae in the fish tank. Freeze-dried and frozen foods are best to solve such worries.

Aquatic pets like turtles, require frequent filtration during summers because they are messy eaters and excrete a lot of waste. Use large canister filters to resolve the problem. In situations of heavy powercuts these filters keep connected and resume usual operation when power returns.

• Keep a neat eye for any kind of discoloration and red-coloured patches. Aquatic pets have a natural tendency of harassing inmates inside the same fish tank. Be observant to take notice of any kind of indications of a disease too.

• Controlling fish population in summers is crucial. Adding to an already oxygen-low fish tank can be fatal for your pets.

• Biological processes like spawning are directed by light. Take special care to replicate natural cycles of light to ensure normal behavioural cycles.

• Allocation of water to each fish in summers is very crucial. A fish tankthat can hold 20 gallons of water is sufficient to house five fish with moderate plantation.

Aquatic plants help in balancing the life-system inside the aquarium. They are very sensitive to heat and must be kept in an air-conditioned room.

• Inevitably, a warm aquarium aggravates growth of algae inside the fish tank. However the presence of green algae inside it ensures a healthy habitat for your pet.

SIMPLE TIPS FOR CLEANING YOUR FISH TANK

There's nothing fishy about this! Cleaning your fish tank is important to keep your fish healthy and happy. It is also essential for making the fish tank look pleasant and attractive. So here are a few steps to help you clean and maintain your fish tank...

1. Decorate your fish tank sensibly
To begin with, decorate your tank preferably with only natural plants, pebbles, shells, rocks etc. and stay away from artificial stuff such as artificial plants, plastic fish etc. This will give the fish a sense of well being as they remain in an environment they are used to. Also, do not overcrowd your tank with too many decorations. Give your fish some space to breathe.

2. No shifting please!
Never remove the fish from the tank for cleaning it. Fish might not adjust to the water they are being shifted to. So just work around them.

3. Be careful while cleaning and changing water
Clean water makes all the difference between a clean and dirty tank. Aquarium water change should be done once every week or two but not completely. Use a gravel vacuum to direct about 10% of the tank water to a bucket. It will also suck fish waste and other dirt from the tank. Now refill the tank with de-chlorinated tap water that has been kept bottled for over 12 hours. Never ever drain all the water from the tank as this creates a completely new cycle for your fish to thrive in!

4. Filter right
Ideally, you should not change the filter pads when you clean the tank as it may cause a change in the cycle. Change them after a week of cleaning. Also, the gravel vacuum should be cleaned with hot water after every tank cleaning. This ensures a clean vacuum for you to suck at the starting of the cleaning process the next time.

5. Use cleaning products bought at pet stores alone
Other cleaning products can leave harmful residues that can kill your fish. This also applies to tools like sponges that can contain chemicals. And before using a product, remember to rinse.

Remember, like it's important for you to breathe clean air, drink clean water and eat clean food, it's important for fish to thrive in clean water. So don't be careless about your dear pets well being.

DÉCOR IDEAS FOR YOUR AQUARIUM

A well-decorated aquarium is very important to keep your fish happy and healthy. Here are some tips that will help you create an engaging environment for your gilled friends. Most décor items are readily available at pet stores.
1.

Try rocks, stones and pebbles
Colourful rocks, stones and pebbles are a perennial favourite. They are also practical because they help keep the filtration system anchored at the bottom of the tank. But check pH levels of rocks, stones and pebbles before placing them in the tank with the help of litmus paper. They should be as neutral as possible else they might be harmful to aqua life.

2.

Flora for your fish
Plants not only create a soothing atmosphere in the tank, they are useful for fish to lay spawn in and serve as filters to balance the toxicity level in the aquarium.

3.

Coral reefs & Shells
It only makes sense to put a coral or two into your aquarium since most fish live among the corals. The use of shells also adds a nice touch. Keep in mind that corals are to be placed only in salt water tanks not fresh water ones.

4.

Thematic decorations
You could go a step further and use plastic toys and props to build your fish a little theme park complete with a giant wheel, roller coaster and carousel. Or you could stick to the maritime theme and throw in plastic divers, pirate ships, treasure chests, submarines and anchors so your fish feel right at home.

5.

Poster fish
Another option is to place an attractive poster at the back of your tank. This is the simplest and most inexpensive way to liven up your fish tank.

FEED YOUR FISH RIGHT

Tanya Munshi

Fish are friendly aquatic pets. Sporting vibrant colors, they swim about as if hurrying some place important, all within the fish tank. Don’t go by their size, they too have hunger pangs. So feed them right and keep them happy!

Fish Eating Habits
Fish eating habits can differ from eating from the top of the water to plucking bits of food from the bottom. Some fish prefer eating at night, even though most fish eat during day time. Your fish should be fed, as per its eating habits and not as per your convenience.

Drop food that sinks to the bottom, for the ease of bottom feeders. For the night timers, switch off the tank light and then drop in the food. Some carnivore fish like to hunt down a prey before eating. So you can drop live worms.

Note, fish food usually doesn’t have a long shelf-life. So it’s best to buy in small quantities that will last you maximum for a month.

Once done, take care to remove any uneaten residue of food in the fish tank. Left-over food can soil the water in the tank.

Types Of Fish Food
  • Fish food varies from pellets, flakes, powders, and the like.
  • Get hold of fish food that comes with a mixture of two types.
  • The main ingredient that keeps your fish healthy is protein. Pick up a protein-rich diet for your fish.
  • Don’t bore your fish by giving them the same food daily. Change from pellets to flakes or powders.
  • Some larger variety of fish are vegetarians, even if they look like meat eaters. So research well before feeding.
