Antonio Diniz has been in the field of education since 1971. He joined Indian School Muscat as a teacher of Science in 1978 and currently holds the post held H.O.D.—Science. Indian School, Muscat is a premiere institute for education and is affiliated to CBSE, New Delhi. It is the largest single shift Indian School in the Gulf imparting education from K.G. to Class XII. Antonio Diniz, is actively involved in students guidance, teacher’s training and various other duties related to day to day running of the School.

There is no one single method of study that is universally accepted. The method or combination of methods, that students adopt depend on various factors. Before dealing with any particular method of study try to answer the following questions related to a diagnostic test. Take this survey and check your score:

• Have you been attending classes regularly
• Have you been attentive in the class and concentrating on what was being taught
• Do you understand most of the things that your teacher explains
• Have you been taking notes while the lesson was in progress
• Did you try to seek any clarification or explanation on any concept that you found it difficult to understand
• Do you ask questions to your teacher about the subject matter that is being taught during the lesson
• Does your teacher consider you to be a serious and responsible student?
• Do you contribute intentionally or unintentionally towards the indiscipline in the classroom.
• Is your aim to score maximum marks in the examination -- Yes/No
• Have you set any goals as to what you intend to be in life --Yes/No
• Are you satisfied with the time you spend at home on studies -- Yes/No
• Do you complete all your H.W. in time by yourself without anyone’s help?
• Do you find it difficult to concentrate while studying at home?
• Do you have a good place to study which is free from disturbances and distractions?
• Do you study in a room where there is no TV, Music System and telephone?

15 yes’—You are an ideal student! But only if you have been sincere and honest while giving the answers! In this case you can adopt any method and you will be successful.
10-14 yes’—Okay, you are getting there. But you need to rectify the nays and be more disciplined.
10 yes’ and below: No point in being intelligent and bright if your study habits need brushing up. )

Steps Leading To Good Study Habits

Here some of the essential steps a student is expected to follow and practice conscientiously during the academic year for successful study.

• Attend school/college regularly and be punctual. This will imbibe a sense of discipline within you.
• Be attentive throughout the lesson and concentrate fully on what is being dealt with. Listen actively.
• Ensure that you understand most things that are explained in class
•  Make notes of all the important points dealt with during the lesson
• Ask questions and get clarifications about concepts, terms etc. which you think are not clear or about what you are not sure of.
•  Show serious interest in the lesson and participate actively in whatever happens in the classroom
• Avoid acts or behaviour that is likely to cause a disturbance or indiscipline in the classroom
• Aim high, only then you will obtain high marks in the exams.
• It is very important to set definite goals about what your career expectations.
• Usually home study is to be done regularly each day to avoid accumulation of work at the weekend or just before exams.
• Do your home H.W. all by yourself, AVOID copying from your friends
•  Devote your full attention and complete concentration to your study.
•  Do not sit to study in a room where there are TV, Music, and Telephone etc. They are potential sources of distraction
• Ensure that your place of study is away from loud noise and has plenty of light and good ventilation.
• Revise all the lessons learnt during the week over the weekend
• Finally do not burn you’re “midnight lamp” continuously just before your examination. You need some sleep to relax your body and
 brain.

Follow these steps with sincerity and turn yourself into an ideal student. However you neglect some or more of the above mentioned steps consciously or unconsciously, it is high time you should do something about.
