UNUSUAL WAYS TO SAVE

A THOUGHTFUL DIWALI IN YOUR BUDGET

- Rachel Fernandes

With the recent recession, downturn of jobs, inflation etc, saving money is on top of the mind of most people. But with the onslaught of the chaotic season of Monsoon that usually surprises you with disasters and eats into your savings, it is essential to minutely plan. Here are a few small things that you can do to save money during this rainy season.

1. Car maintenance
Get your car ready to face the downpour by getting it serviced and checked for any loose connections, rust, engine issues and so on. Servicing will iron out the small issues that could transform into big concerns with a liberal splash of water, ensuring that you get through the heavy rains and flooded roads smoothly. Carry out any repairs that may be necessary as well, but do all of this before the rains begin.

2. House repairs
Rains can lash out at your nest rather brutally, which is why, it's best to check your house for expected seepage issues, leakage, leaking pipes, clogging drains, and so on. This will ensure that your home and your household items stay safe and you will not have to spend extra money on replacing anything.

3. Monsoon vacation
Everybody feels that summer or even winters call for a vacation, but ever heard of the monsoon break? During the rains, you are more likely to get cheaper air/train travel fare. Also, cheaper packages are offered by hotels/tour operators, so opt for a monsoon holiday this year and you're likely to save quite a bit.

4. Electric bills
After the blasting summer heat, it's now time to turn off the air conditioner and allow natural cool breeze to enter your house through open windows. This way you will save a great deal on your electricity bills.

5. Qualitative rain gear
Invest in buying qualitative rain gear, like good umbrellas, raincoats, rain jackets etc. If they are of good quality, they will give good protection and keep you dry through the rains, ensuring that you don't fall sick and run huge medical bills. It will also last longer and you can perhaps store them and use them for the next monsoon season. So don't scrimp on this one.

Plan a bit ahead of the season so that when the downpour begins, you can sit back and enjoy it, knowing well that you are going to be safe and sound.

5 STEPS TO AVOID BEING CONNED OF YOUR MONEY

How would you feel if you were conned of all the money that youve been saving up for retirement, a world tour or just another rainy day? Very obviously, you would be devastated. Here are a few steps to protect your hard earned money from various unfortunate incidents, money scams and scammers:

1. Read the fine print in legal documents
Stock markets, mutual funds and fixed deposits are good methods to invest your income. However, one must get the legal documents checked by a professional accountant and also read the fine print. Often hidden clauses can be found in the fine print.

2. Always ask for proof of identification
Door to door salesmen offer a variety of promotional discounts to customers. However, you must always ask for proof of identification, to verify if the salesman is a bona fide person from the company. You can also call up the company to check if that particular promotional offer is being offered to customers.

3. Receipts and warrantys are a must
While purchasing any product or service, it is always important to ask for a receipt or a warranty. In case of damage, servicing or repair, you can produce the receipt or warranty.

4. Protect yourself from online scams
The Internet has become a common medium for various money scams where mails offering gifts or winning of online lotteries are sent to people. Such mails often turn out to be bogus and it is better to delete them rather than opening them.

5. Beware of get rich quick schemes
Many people are lured by get rich quick schemes as the scammer offers double the amount within short time periods. The scammer often gets you to invest a large amount of money in various bogus companies. Before investing money in any company, always do a thorough background check of the company as well as the person offering the scheme.
