WIDE HORIZONS
One Step At A Time

I once heard a beautiful hymn which asked the Lord to give me one day at a time, so that I could live it completely. If we were to really live one day at a time, ie in the present instead of unnecessarily dwelling in the past or worrying about the future we would be able to give the present its true worth. The present holds the key to success, which is within our reach only if we keep our senses alert to its calling. Have a clear idea about what your goals are and work towards them. Problems are opportunities in disguise, they are opportunities that bring out the best in us, they are opportunities that daunt and test our determination and resolution. Don’t let problems break you, break them into small parts and deal with each individually.

Choosing Differently

Making choices in life has never come easy to anyone, but this simple self-test will help you beat out the chaff and weigh the grain for its worth.

• Having a sense of purpose is essential before setting off on your choice of goal. Be clear about your requirements and you will know what fits your bill the best.

• Asking introspective questions like `what is the purpose of this exercise', `what will I achieve out of it', will help in setting more lucid goals. Writing down the answers will further help in crystallizing your choices by annulling non-required elements.

• Being victimized or perceiving oneself as the victim is the trick of the mind. Do not allow yourself to appear as the victim since you alone are responsible for the state that you are in.

• Do not expect miraculous changes to re-sculpt your life to your liking. Change is nothing more than a shift in perspective that usually stems from deep-rooted conviction to be the best.

• Doing things differently and doing different things adds perspective and dimension to life. Be open to alternatives and risk changes there is a fathomless latent talent that lies buried deep within, the trick lies in tapping it and utilizing it to the fullest.

• The human mind is fortified by courage, choice and change. Taking charge of a situation is facile once you have made up your mind to bring these tools into play.

• You have a choice to sculpt a future that is different and better than your past…the choice is yours…will you make it?

What Do You See?

When we look at a bunch of bougainvilleas over a wall growing haphazardly we think of it being overgrown and spoiling the garden, we also think of thorns. Consider this, when a kid sees it, he/she first pluck it. A smile radiates the young face. We did it when we were a kid.

When we hear a tune, we just sit and listen and at the most hum along, we feel we can’t carry a tune and match the rhythm. A child, dances to the tune. He / she feels the beat, they relate to the music of the heart and even if they don’t know the lyrics, they make up their own.

When we see a puddle, we walk around it, a kid builds dams, sails boats, splashes and gleefully plays in it.

When we sit down to pray, we use fancy words and ask God for everything we want. A child says “Dear God, thank you for my toys and my friends. Please keep my mummy and daddy happy.”

Aren’t we missing life? Are there kids in the world for us to teach them or to learn from them?

Your Habits Define You

”Creature of habit” - an interesting term to ponder on. But how many of us are creatures of habit? And even if we are do they dictate our personality traits? To draw an analogy, we can compare the cultivation of habit to making a strong rope. When you begin or form a habit, its just a thin thread-fragile and susceptible to collapse. When you repeat the habit the thread strengthens. Every time you repeat the habit, you add a strand to the thread and slowly but surely, a strong rope emerges.

Consider this, “your rope of habit” then becomes your lifeline that helps you through difficult situations and testing times in your life. The circle of “habit-cultivation” is fundamentally simple. Your thoughts set your purpose, you act to meet your purpose and your actions form your habit. When your actions are repetitive, they become a habit which define your character. Your character ultimately defines you and your destiny.

So set the wheels of your thought in motion. Let them guide you to habits that shape you and your future. It is you who can dictate your thoughts, actions and habit. It is you who defines your character. It is you who carves your destiny.

Pep Quote
“The secret of a leader lies in the tests he has faced over the whole course of his life and the habit of action he develops in meeting those tests.”
--Gail Sheehy
