Got A Cold? Try Peppermint …

Peppermint is referred to as a ‘wonder herb’, because besides lending an appetizing flavour, it also has several therapeutic properties. Peppermint oil and dried leaves are available in outlets that stock ayurvedic products and herbs.

You can battle cold weather as well as a cold by sipping on peppermint flavoured herbal tea. It helps in the process of digestion. The menthol in peppermint soothes lining of the digestive tract. It also stimulates the production of bile (a digestive fluid that helps your body in breaking down the nutrients in your food).

• Use 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried peppermint leaves per cup of boiling water.
• Menthol (from peppermint) vapours are effective for relieving nasal, sinus and chest congestion.

Peppermint is effective against cough, thus peppermint oil is an important ingredient in many cough syrups.

Say Good-bye To Back Aches!

The muscles of the back support it much like a tent pole that is supported by ropes. Any slackening in the ropes and the pole tilts. Here are a few ways to keep back aches away:

• Posture is important. So, do not slouch or stoop while standing or sitting. Habitual bad posture can weaken the supporting muscles.
• Never twist around to pick up anything. Stand up and turn and then pick it up. Your back does not have any springs.
• Avoid bending to lift something heavy. First sit down, pick it up and then stand up.
• Take short breaks if your work requires long hours of sitting. Stand up and stretch.
• In tense situations, spare a thought for your back, check your posture. A hunched posture and tense muscles at the nape of the neck is sure to finally lead to aches and pains.

So relax. Take a break, don't break your back!

Clogged Noses

To open up clogged or choked nasal tract, make a saline at home. Add ¼ tsp salt to a glass of boiled and cooled water and administer a drop or two to the nose before meals and bedtime. Inhaling steam is also known to unclog stuffy noses. Wrap a towel over the head and breathe in the vapours from a basin holding hot water.
