We all have idols—people we look up to and whose qualities we admire. They could be business icons or famous personalities from other professions, but essentially they are people who stand for something that we strongly believe. Besides these, it is good to be able to look up to someone who you can interact with at the workplace.
So why do we need a mentor who is closer to home?
For one, this bond of mentor-protégé can be very fulfilling and useful for your career in the long term. Your mentor will be able to give you guidance. Your mentor will laud you for your accomplishments, which is a very good motivation for accomplishing more. Your mentor will be able to evaluate your goals critically and also tell you how to achieve them. Remember that this person need not be in the same profession or even department as you, but how good they are at their job is what matters.
Approach this person informally for lunch, build a rapport and be sure to choose someone who is performing well at their job and is satisfied with their role in the company.
